The Product

Orthogon had developed a unique technology which brings intelligence into an otherwise simple device – the intramedullary nail. The technology turns the nail into a dynamic device, which is controlled, non-invasively, by an external magnetic field, generated by a proprietary coil. The device will be used for limb elongation, non-union fractures and as a primary fixator which will expediate the total healing time of fractures.

Background

Intramedullary nails have been in use as primary fixators for years. As opposed to external fixators, they do not cause damage to soft tissues and the danger of infections is reduced. However, the nails are static, while the external fixators can be controlled and adjusted. Orthogon's technology allows to combine the best of all worlds, and to create an internal device, which is dynamic, controllable and adjustable.

The Need

People suffering from congenital defects resulting in disproportionate limbs, bone shortening due to cancer and severe traumatic injuries are in constant search of a technology which will enable limb lengthening without the suffering which is associated with external fixators use. Further more, debilitating back, hip, and knee problems are often caused by differences in length of legs. To date, no acceptable solution to this problem exists.  People suffering from severe forms of dwarfism are also seeking solutions to their situation.

The Market

Orthogon’s technology is currently aimed at three distinct target markets (1) limb elongation, (2) pimary bone fixation and stimulation, (3) treatment for non-union fractures. These applications represent market value of over 1 billion US dollars per year.
